Discussion Questions and Ideas:
 
What is a peddler?
What are wares?
Discuss feelings: happy, sad, confused, tired etc.
Why did the monkeys only give the peddler back his hats when he threw down his own checked cap?
Why was the peddler walking slowly?
What would happen if the peddler "upset" his caps?
Discuss what kinds of people use different hats
 
Activities:
  • Dramatize your favorite part of the story
  • Gather all of the caps that you own and see how many you can carry on your head
  • Decorate a plain painter's cap
  • Bake monkey bread
  • Talk about how many words rhyme with "cap"
  • Play the game "A Barrel of Monkeys"
  • Play "Monkey See, Monkey Do"
  • Practice counting to 50
  • Introduce money and discover the many different ways to make .50
  • Work on creating a repeating pattern such as the one the Peddler created with his caps (4 gray, 4 brown, 4 blue, 4 red etc.)
  • Watch the Caps for Sale video
  • Count how many caps the peddler has balanced on his head, see if you can beat his number
  • Visit the zoo to see the real monkeys
