Readiness skills are basic skills that all children
need to master before or during kindergarten. These are non-academic skills that
are used to enhance other things such as hand-eye coordination, visualization, memory etc.
Below are some hands on ideas for encouraging readiness skills.

- Cutting properly with scissors. Allow your child to work freely (under
supervision) with scissors and then work up to cutting straight lines and circles.
- Gluing and pasting
- Sewing cards. Out of medium weight cardstock cut simple shapes, use a
hole punch to put holes around the outer perimeter, affix a shoestring to one of the holes.
Allow your child to thread the string through the holes in any design or pattern.
- Transferring. Place 2 bowls and a spoon in front of your child. In the bowl on the left place cotton balls, dry beans or rice. Show
your child how to use the spoon to transfer the dry objects from one bowl to the other.
When he has mastered this try using a bowl of water and an eyedropper in place of the dry objects.
- Play card games such as go fish, memory and old maid.
- Play outdoor games such as basketball, t-ball, soccer, catch and kick ball to encourage physical activity and coordination.
- Sequence. This game can be purchased or made at home. Simply choose a sequence that you would like to use such as making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Take pictures of your child going through each movement (pulling out bread, putting
peanut butter on one side etc.). Give the pictures to your child and let him
put them in the correct order from start to finish.
- Learning the following important information: address, telephone number, full name, parents full names etc.
